This talented and imaginative man is best-known for his paintings, but Dali mastered several arts in his lifetime, including film, sculpture, and photography, collaborating with artists across a variety of media. Dalí trained at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, where he cultivated his eccentric personal style and rubbed elbows with other notable artists and writers of the day, including filmmaker Luis Bunuel and poet Federico Garcia Lorca.
Early realistic paintings such as Basket of Bread gave way to experiments with Cubism and eventually resulted in the Surrealistic style for which he became known.
Dalí held a one-man show in Paris in 1929, where he met his muse and future wife, Gala Eluard. The two became a pair and eventually married. Dalí's most famous picture, The Persistence of Memory, with its melting watch faces, was painted in 1931 and brought considerable fame to Dalí in the United States, where he and Gala became part of the lively social scene. The pair moved to New York with the advent of World War II and resided there from 1940 to 1948.
Dalí moved out of Surrealism into what is described as his "classical" period, creating a series of 19 large canvases that explored religious, historical and scientific themes. He returned to Catalonia in 1949 and would spend his remaining years there, facing criticism for choosing to live under Franco-ruled Spain. During this time he filmed television commercials, designed logos for a candy and the Eurovision song contest, and explored new art media. His wife, Gala, passed away in 1982, after which Dalí's health suffered considerably. Dalí passed away from heart failure in 1989, leaving behind a large body of work in a variety of media.
Perfumery does not seem an illogical choice, given the variety of interests and expertise of this celebrated artist. A famous Dalí quote conceptualizes the perfume line: "Of the five senses, the sense of smell is incontestably the one that best conveys a sense of immortality." A partnership with Cofinluxe was already underway, and the scent that would become the first fragrance, 1983's Salvador Dalí, had been chosen by Dali and Gala before her death. Gala was purportedly an intense perfumista with a large collection, and with a fondness for roses, which figure prominently in the scent. The bottle's design was inspired by Dalí's painting, Apparition of The Face of Aphrodite of Knidos, with its well-formed lips and nose. Intended as a limited edition, the fragrance was a success and was offered to the international market in 1985. A men's companion scent was produced in 1987, and to date, more than 25 perfumes have been introduced under the Salvador Dalí label, all with interesting packaging inspired by Dalí's artwork.
