Andy Warhol, was an American painter, printmaker and filmmaker famous for being a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. He was born as Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Andy Warhol Museum exists in memory of his life and artwork in his hometown.
His first steps in the career were those of a commercial illustrator in the beginning of the 1960s, but what brought him worldwide fame was for his work as a painter, avant-garde filmmaker, record producer, author, and member of highly diverse social circles.
Warhols art inspired numerous retrospective exhibitions, books and documentary films. One of his most widely known expressions was "15 minutes of fame." His works are very high priced and held in high esteem today. His painting that achieved the highest price is 1963 canvas titled Eight Elvises - $100 million!
Warhol left his mark on various media painting, photography, drawing, and sculpture. In addition, he was a highly prolific filmmaker.
Pop art was an experimental form that several artists were independently adopting. One of them was Warhol and he even got the nickname "Pope of Pop". In this new style he focused on popular subjects or persons and interpreted them in his way. He started with images taken from cartoons and s, hand-painted with paint drips. His great success was a display of pop art paintings in1961, as the backdrop for New York Department Store Bronwit Teller's window display. His painting became more and more simplified and they depicted brand names, celebrities, dollar signs without clear traces of the artist's "hand".
Warhols first major exhibition included art works that featured his famous cans of Campbell's Soup, which he claimed to have had for lunch for most of his life. Cans and dollar bills became his main subject matter.
Another popular subject of his imagery were celebrities. His primary concern was however not working on a signature subject matter, but working on a signature style, which was developing further. The painter liked to use silk-screening; making different versions and variations.
Between 1963 and 1968, he made more than 60 films and about 500 short black-and-white "screen test" portraits. He also created his famous series of static films including Kiss, Eat, and Sleep.
